The United Nations Environment Programme was established in 1972 as a result of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment to facilitate international cooperation on solving environmental issues. Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, it also encourages sustainable use of the world's resources. It encourages the implementation of environmentally sound policies and programmes.
